Ohio snowbird fishing destinations in Florida

Florida Bass Fishing is a good place to begin. It sports nice maps on bass hotspots in Florida lakes, information on spawning season, it's earlier than Ohio's (November thru April with high months of February and March), and tips on slogging thru hydrilla and peppergrass.

I especially enjoy the blog Bass Online by fishers around Florida showing off their big bass catches. The site has one of the best collections of places to fish in Florida.

Orlando Florida Bass Fishing Guide Steve Boyd keeps a wonderful collection of largemouth pictures from the Kissimmee Lake Chain and Lake Toho in Central Florida.

Ohio bass sites

Number 1 on this list is All About Fishing. This is my favorite! Organized and informative. Begin by reading about bass species, then navigate on the left side bar to the state of Ohio for more specific information. Rick Seaman is the capable editor of this knowledge base.

Ohio may lead the nation in innovative bass tournaments with the Electric Bass Circuit. Organized in southwest Ohio in 2002, the rules enforce eco-friendly, green fishing. Your boat must be 14-feet or shorter and powered by an electric trolling motor. They're gaining some big sponsors like Minn Kota trolling motors.

I picked the Athens County Bassmasters site for their Fisherman's Prayer printed at the bottom of their website.

Follow the bass pros

If you follow the pro-bass tournaments, Bass Fan is for you. It is a nice clean site of people news in the world of tournament bass fishing. Of course B.A.S.S. on ESPN is a standard-bearer. You can learn from pros Chad and Denny Brauer at their website hosting Brauerbass Fishing Articles. Ultimate Bass will help you stay current on industry news.

Now is the time to think about early bass waterin' holes. Bass Fishing USA offers interesting articles on how to find early spring bass, how to effectively cover potential bass waters, how to buy a bass boat, and bass baits worth more than money. Bassin' USA links to bass movies on YouTube. Shows handfeeding largemouth bass a live bluegill bait, feeding live mice to largemouths, underwater video footage. How to Bass.com adds fresh content frequently with some unusual stuff like a video showing how to rig a lizard and an uncensored collection of jokes. The Bass Pros offer bass shows on the web.

Expanding the horizon, a nice site to visit is Western Bass.com, an organized guide to bass fishing in California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico. Click on the map for a list of lakes in each state.

Field and Stream now has an unbelievably clean and organized section on bass. The pictures are large, clear and the text is easy to read on a desktop computer. BassFishin.com is similar style of site, and so is Sportskool.

Game and Fish hosts the magazine's collection of bass fishing media, and you can read tons of bass fishing articles, tips, guide on Bass Pro Shop.

Exercises to tone fishing muscles

Here is my personal list of exercises for fishing success. They are stretches and specific muscle builders. Always consult with your physician before doing any of these exercises.

Exercises to make casting more perfect

Stretch and twist your torso: From a seated position with arms folded over your chest, bend at waist to the right, hold for a count of 10, return to straight seated position and repeat to left. Now rotate at the waist to one side, hold for count of 10, return to neutral seated position and repeat to opposite side. Do not bounce the stretch, do not stretch until you feel pain, do not over exert yourself. Inhale before the stretch and exhale during the stretch.

Shoulder rolls, arm rolls, wrist rolls: In a standing position, head up, eyes forward, arms at sides, slowly roll shoulders forward in small circles progressing to larger circles. Reverse. Do about 10 times each. Now extend arms out level with floor. Make small, forward circular movements with arms progressing to larger circles. Reverse. Do about 10 times each. Finally extend your arms out in front of you. Make circular motions with both wrists, first in one direction, then the reverse direction. Do about 10 times each.

Upper arms, chest stretch: Stand with feet shoulder width apart, arms extended out level with floor, palms facing forward. Move arms back as far as you can. You will feel the stretch in the biceps and upper chest muscles.

Stretch your wrists: Put hands together like you are praying. Raise elbows until arms are parallel to the floor while keeping palms of hands flat together. Hold for count of 10, release. Repeat 3 times (with weights see this article).

Stretch your fingers: Rub hands together vigorously to warm them up. Make balled fists with both hands. Hold for a count of 10. Open fists and extend fingers as far as possible. Hold for a count of 10. Repeat 3 times (for more extensive Chinese wrist and finger exercises see this article).

Build "the fishing muscle" for rod bending landings

The muscle most responsible for hauling in a fish is the one that tires most easily, the brachialis. It is the muscle that flexes the elbow joint. I call it the "fishing muscle."

The number one exercise to add rod-bending power to your fish landing skill is the preacher hammer dumbbell curl followed by the hammer dumbbell curl.

Reverse dumbbell curls and reverse preacher curls can also help.

Warm tips for winter steelhead fishing

Steelhead conserve energy during winter months. They become downright lazy, laying around in slow water waiting for food to float by. Set irresistable bait offerings in front of their noses.

- Seek areas of slow moving water farther inland.

- Look for convergences between slow pools and faster water.

- Fish inlet heads and side branches.

- Eddies can be productive when you let the bait drift over.

- Bright-colored spawn sacs always work best (see selection in Fishing Gear, sidebar link).

Do I really believe that bigger fish are caught 3 days before or 3 days after a new (dark) moon or a full (bright) moon? It seems possible.

Do I think the moon really has anything to do with it? Gravitational pull affects everything, even the earth's crust. Light and darkness matter.

I believe prey fish accumulate near light sources. Game fish chase prey fish. On a new moon, the water is very dark. Bait fish come to the surface seeking any illumination. Game fish follow. It's possible to catch limits and lunkers in shallow water.

Join line directly to hook shank with the simple snell

All-purpose uni-knot is better than the lover's knot for everything else

To protect your eyes and skin from damaging sun ray reflection off the water:

-> wear a wraparound, polarized pair of sunglasses
-> top the head with a broad-brimmed hat
-> cover the arms and torso with a long-sleeved, white shirt
-> move comfortably in loose fitting pants
-> walk in socks and solid-soled shoes
-> apply zinc oxide to exposed skin, especially the face
-> mop up the sweat with a tidy neck bandanna

Since I have sensitive skin offended by the sun, the apparel listed is functional, and depending on the label, it can be quite the fashion.

There are sunscreens that use natural ingredients with no chemicals, but I do not know how well they work. I usually sweat them off within the hour.

Do not fish near lowhead dams!

Picture shows drowning machine hydraulic begins approximately 10 feet before water flows over dam, and about 20-25 feet downstream in area marked by boil line. Unlike a normal rapid where water flows downstream, the powerful current within the boil line flows upstream, trapping foreign objects against the dam wall.

An unwise person might try to fish from the dry ground just below the dam. This and anywhere around the dam are places to avoid for safety reasons.
